Introduction to Oolitic Aragonite for Laying Hens
An adult laying hen, over the age of 18 weeks, requires a daily intake of 4-5g of calcium, which is often not sufficiently provided by their regular diet. Calcium is crucial for increasing eggshell integrity, controlling muscle spasms (especially those involved in laying eggs), ensuring proper bone growth and development, and facilitating the absorption and utilization of phosphorus.
Why Choose Oolitic Aragonite?
Oolitic Aragonite stands out as the world’s purest form of naturally precipitated calcium carbonate from the ocean. Its unique crystalline morphology, characterized by orthorhombic, bipyramid crystals, boasts an extremely high surface area and aspect ratio. This distinctive structure grants aragonite superior bioavailability (calcium uptake) compared to other calcium forms.
Features
- Superior Calcium Source: Derived from the purest form of calcium carbonate.
- Purer than Oyster Shell: Offers a more refined calcium carbonate than traditional oyster shell supplements.
- Rich in Amino Acids: Naturally occurring amino acids are abundant in Oolitic Aragonite.
- Essential for Egg Shell Integrity: Crucial for maintaining strong, healthy eggshells.
- Superfine Powder: Ensures high bioavailability for optimal calcium absorption.
Pros
- High Bioavailability: The superfine powder and unique crystal structure of Oolitic Aragonite enhance calcium absorption.
- Natural and Pure: Derived from natural sources, making it a preferable choice for those seeking minimal processing and high purity.
- Supports Overall Health: Contributes to bone growth, muscle health, and phosphorus absorption, supporting the overall well-being of laying hens.
Cons
- Specific Dietary Needs: Laying hens have specific calcium requirements, and excessive intake can be harmful.
- Quality Variance: The quality of Oolitic Aragonite can vary depending on the source and processing methods.

Better than oyster shells
I switched to this from oyster shells and have not had any issues with weak or thin shells since! The hens love it and seem to absorb it better than oyster shells! This is a must have for the hen fancier!

Great for picky birds
I bought this for my quails initially, and I was a bit worried with how fine the granules are because they’re basically like sand. I add it to their feed, but it does seem to slip through to the bottom of their box, so I mainly put it on their veggies. They’re very picky with their veggies but they’ll eat it even if it’s coated in this stuff. I’ve started adding it to my parakeet’s food off and on as well since they’re currently breeding and need the extra calcium, and I haven’t had any issues. A tiny bit goes a long way, too, so this is great value for the money.

Great for the health of your Chickens
The oyster shell calcium is ground quite fine, and my chickens love having access to a container of it. At first I thought it might be too fine, but the girls love it! I have not had any of my girls suffered digestive issues at all.

Awesome
My chickens donât eat the oyster shells and thier eggs are weak. I coat thier feed with this powder and it makes a huge difference on thier egg production and strengthens the shells.

Best calcium supplement I’ve ever used.
I could not get my rescue and old hens to increase their calcium intake. Their eggs were super soft. I started using this product, mixing in their wet food and I noticed a significant improvement almost immediately. You have to wet their food and sprinkle the fine powder on it or mix it in. You cannot add it to the dry feed. It will settle on the bottom of the food dish.

Meh
Personally, I love and prefer this but my chickens are apparently too picky and don’t use it so I had to switch back to oyster shell.
