Josh’s Frogs Mealworms
Mealworms are the larvae of the Darkling Beetle Tenebrio molitor and have long been a staple feeder insect in the reptile, amphibian, and bird hobby because of how inexpensive and easy they are to store.
Features
- Mealworms are great feeder insects for a variety of pets including Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos, Fat Tail Geckos, Bearded Dragons, lizards, wild birds, and fish.
- They are approximately ½"-¾" in length, but sizes may vary slightly because they are a natural product.
- Mealworms can be fed as a treat or staple, depending on the animals you’re feeding.
- They should be dusted with a proper vitamin and mineral supplement before being fed to your pet.
- Older Mealworms may pupate, but these pupae may still be offered to your pet. However, discard adult beetles as most animals find these distasteful.
Pros
- Inexpensive and easy to store, making them a great option for pet owners.
- High in protein, which is beneficial for the health and growth of pets.
- Can be used as a treat or staple food for a wide range of pets.
- Easy to care for and can live for about a month in the fridge.
- Specially packaged to ensure live arrival in most weather conditions.
Cons
- Mealworms may pupate and turn into adult beetles, which are not preferred by most pets.
- Require proper storage conditions (45-55F) to prolong their lifespan.
- May become dark in color and spoil if not stored correctly, requiring regular checks to discard any bad Mealworms.
How to Feed
When using Mealworms with reptiles or amphibians, feed them using feeding tongs or in a worm dish. For birds, place the Mealworms in a deep plastic dish or feeder, as they can climb and escape from wooden feeders. Wild birds love Mealworms as a high-protein treat, and they can be taken back to the nest for fledglings.
How to Store
Mealworms are shipped on wheat bran without food, which is the ideal way to store them. Keep them at 45-55F to prolong their lifespan. Under ideal conditions, Mealworms should keep for several weeks. Check regularly for any that have turned dark or black, and discard these as they have spoiled.
