Introduction to Oyster Shell Supplement
Hens go through a remarkable process building eggs, and Oyster shell provides crucial support at a specific point. The shells are built last, usually overnight, and this process can deplete a chicken’s calcium levels. The calcium in Oyster shell is digested at a different rate than that found in their feed, ensuring they have extra calcium during those night hours when they are creating shells.

Great size crushed oyster shells for my hens
My hens had thick eggshells when they were getting oysters shells up until a month ago when no one had crushed oyster shell in stock. None of the feed stores within an hour from me have them and no one else on Amazon. They offer a substitute of pebble looking calcium supplement that is made from clams and oysters. My hens do not like it and as a result, some had soft shell eggs and the rest have thin eggshells like the regular white eggs sold at stores. Their eggs size have also gotten smaller!Iâm so glad to find Small Pet Select crushed oyster shells. They arenât the white pebbles, they are the real crushed oyster shells. Bonus, extra âlikeâ on the size of the oyster shells because they are smaller in size than the Scratch n Peck (which is also out of stock) that I usually get or the ones by pound at the feed store. They also look fresher than the ones sold at the local feed store. My hens are, as we speak, eating the SmallPet Select oyster shells and ignoring the clam/oyster pebbles (waste of my money). The only reason i gave 4 stars on value for money is because itâs a bit pricey but then again, itâs what i want and my hens need them so its worth it. I paid the same price for Scratch n Peck organic oyster shells but i like the size of this product better. Hoping this will help get my hensâ eggshells thick and strong again.

Great for hens, ducks and geese!
I feed all flock, so my group needs the extra calcium for strong egg shells. They love that it is flaked, a 10 pound box lasts about 8 months for us

Actual Crushed Oyster Shell!!!
Finely crushed oyster shell was the first type of oyster shell I ever gave my chickens. They love it and I let them eat as much of it as their bodies want. Then for some reason I couldn’t find the finely crushed shell anymore. Let me clarify, the other brands SAID they were crushed, but it was more of a tumbled rock consistency (think aquarium gravel size) and not the smaller, flakier, size they were used to. Being chickens, they turned their beaks up and refused to eat the other stuff. In contrast they have been gobbling this bag of Small Pet Select Oyster Shell right up! Just to be clear, the consistency of this oyster shell is thin, flaky, or more of a shaved oyster shell consistency whereas the stuff they refused to eat was like small tumbled rocks. To describe it another way, when you see this oyster shell you think “Yep, this is crushed up oyster shell” when you see the sub par stuff you think it looks like small white rocks. No wonder my chickens prefer this!

Nice supplement
I never see the little dinosaurs eating these but after a few days its all gone so they must eat them at some time. And our eggs are always hard so I guess it helps! I always keep it stocked in a separate feeder.

My chickens love it, shipping box was abysmal
This is oyster shell flake, not pebbles, and my chickens love it and if needed it isn’t difficult to break down if the pieces are too large for you chickens. For all that I give it a 4-5 star rating. However, I am knocking a few stars off for the careless way it was shipped. I expected it to be loose in the box because you are ordering it in its original box, but the problem is that it wasn’t taped up properly. There was a strip on the top and bottom of the box to keep it from opening, but it wasn’t sealed around the sides at all. When the UPS driver handed it to me and I waked from my living room to my kitchen it left a trail of shell behind – and it wasn’t a little trail either. After seeing that I wondered how much more of it was lost during transit? I don’t have a scale so I couldn’t weight it, but clearly a fair amount had to have been lost based on how much trailed behind me in the short distance from my living room to my kitchen. I did contact Amazon about it and they were helpful, but in the future, a note to whoever ships this: You need to fully cover the top and bottom flaps in tape. I don’t understand why they didn’t. I can’t imagine whoever packed this up wasn’t seeing that it was coming out of the box.

My chickens love it!
I was using a big namebrand oyster shell, which I am pretty sure was mostly limestone. The big namebrand I would even put Rite in their food, and they didnât want to eat it. I heard that limestone oyster shell is quick absorption as opposed to real oyster shell, which is a slower absorption rate. This looks like real oyster shells, my chickens gobble it up and their eggs are rock hard. definitely recommend!

By far the best grit I can give my ducks. Itâs jus the right consistency. Itâs hard, but can be broken up in my fingertips.
